Your options for pebble-dash or old render

  • Repair and paint. Usually the cheapest way to freshen pebble-dash; spray painting is usually best because of the texture (Checkatrade).
  • Render over it. Possible if the pebble-dash is sound, but often not recommended because it can add unnecessary stress to the wall (Checkatrade).
  • Strip and re-render. Generally the safest and most straightforward way to get rid of pebble-dash (Checkatrade).
  • Strip to brick. Very labour-intensive and the riskiest for the brickwork – at best it needs cleaning and repointing; at worst it uncovers or causes brick damage (Checkatrade; JobPrices).

Typical costs

National guides put stripping pebble-dash and applying a new flat render at about £2,100–£3,000 for a 2-bed bungalow, £3,800–£5,200 for a 3-bed semi and £6,300–£7,800 for a 4-bed detached house, before painting or repairs (Checkatrade). Removal on its own is typically £20–£60 per m² (MyBuilder). See the full cost guide.

Before you strip anything: in a conservation area, or if your house is listed, rendering or pebble-dashing needs permission – and in East London many conservation areas also have Article 4 directions. See our planning guide.
